A structural protein called collagen contributes to the full, firm appearance of young, healthy lips. Once we reach our twenties, we lose collagen from our skin at a rate of about one percent a year. In the lips, this can lead to a loss of volume, resulting in thin or flat lips. During our thirties and forties, the upper lip can lose its distinctive V-shape area – the Cupid’s bow – and tiny lines may appear. Some people may have a genetic predisposition to thin lips or may wish to correct a physical imbalance. Others may simply wish to enhance the aesthetic appearance of their lips.
